Detailed patterns adorn dramatic landscapes and natural elements Linnane Armstrong's linocut and woodcut prints. Nature has always been a source of inspiration in her artwork, and relief printmaking allows her to express the beauty she finds in nature's smallest details as well as large landscapes. Her works are inspired by both Western and Japanese aesthetic traditions.

Growing up on Whidbey Island, Armstrong learned about translating her surroundings into art from her mother, artist Mary Ellen O'Connor. After earning a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, she was drawn back to Whidbey Island, as the place where everywhere she looks, she sees another piece of art waiting to be created.

When Armstrong designs a monochrome piece, she aims to accentuate contrasting values as the detailed patterns carry the eye of the viewer through the image. She also designs pieces with color details or full color, created using either multiple blocks or hand coloring. The strong graphic contrasts of an image hand printed from a block unite the styles of monochrome and multiple color pieces.

Armstrong's process begins with going into nature to take reference photos, then drawing and designing, followed by carving, and printing by hand. This can be a lengthy process, however it is very meditative. Whether in nature or in her studio carving an image of nature, the rest of the world melts away. She captures the serenity and peace she feels when working on her prints.
